“Mom.”

She looked down.

Her son had Brett’s dark hair and her grandmother Opal’s stubborn mouth.

At twelve, he should have been thinking about basketball, whether his tie made him look ridiculous, and how much chocolate cake he could steal before dinner officially ended.

Instead, he was watching his father walk into a ballroom with another woman.

“Don’t cry,” Micah whispered.

Audrey wiped beneath one eye.

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“I’m allowed one.”

“One what?”

“Tear.”

Micah considered.

“Okay.”

Then his gaze moved across the room.

Toward Sierra.

Toward the gold wheat brooch.

His expression changed.

Audrey felt his fingers tighten.

“Is that Grandma Opal’s?”

“Great-Grandma Opal.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes.”

Micah’s face went red.

“Dad gave it to her?”

Audrey said nothing.

There was no other explanation.

Brett had taken the brooch three weeks earlier.

He had promised to repair it.

Now it rested above Sierra Vaughn’s heart.

Not lost.

Not forgotten.

Given.

Micah stood.

Audrey caught his sleeve.

“No.”

“Mom.”

“No scene.”

“He stole it.”

“I know.”

“And she’s wearing it.”

“I can see that.”

“So do something.”

Audrey looked around the ballroom.

Laughter.

Then a photograph of the original incorporation celebration.

Audrey beside Brett.

Holding a document.

The caption Micah had added read:

AUDREY FINCH HOLLOWAY — CO-FOUNDER

The ballroom became very quiet.

Brett’s printed program had called him the singular vision.

Micah’s video called Audrey what the original documents did.

Co-founder.

Then the final slide appeared.

A close photograph of Opal.

Gold wheat brooch on her dress.

Beneath it:

SOME THINGS SHOULD NEVER BE TAKEN FROM THE WOMEN WHO BUILT THEM.

Audrey stopped breathing.

“Micah.”

He looked suddenly less brave.

“Too much?”

Before she could answer, applause began.

Not polite applause.

Real.

Someone stood.

The brooch rested on the dresser.

“Are you mad at me?”

She turned.

“For the video?”

He nodded.

“A little.”

His face fell.

She continued:

“And proud.”

Confusion.

“You should have asked me.”

“I knew you’d say no.”

“Exactly why you should have asked.”

He looked down.

“Sorry.”

Audrey sat beside him.

“But thank you for reminding the room that I was there.”

Micah looked up.

“Dad’s been acting like he invented everything.”

“I know.”

Then his expression became nervous.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“There’s something else.”

Audrey’s stomach tightened.

He went to his backpack.

Pulled out a stack of printer paper.

“I found these because Dad printed them on the office printer downstairs and left them in the tray.”

Audrey took the pages.

Legal language.

Company names.

Assignments.

Licensing rights.

Trademark applications.

She read the first page.

Then the second.

Her blood went cold.

At the top:

Audrey’s hands stopped.

“What is this?”

Micah swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

She kept reading.
