“What is this garbage?” he demanded, refusing to touch it.
“Open it, Michael,” my mother said quietly from the sofa. Her voice was surprisingly firm this time. She leaned forward and flipped open the cover herself.
The first page was an itemized master summary printed directly from my bank. It listed twelve distinct transactions, dated from November 1st of last year to October 1st of this year. Each transaction was for exactly $6,000, transferred via wire to an account holding the name Khloe Bennett. Beneath the summary were twelve corresponding monthly bank statements, each line item clearly highlighted in bright yellow marker with the memo field reading: Parents’ Mortgage Payment.
Dad leaned over, his eyes scanning the numbers. His face went through a terrifying progression of colors—from deep red to a pale, sallow white.
“This… this is fake,” Dad stammered, though his voice lacked any real conviction. “You made this on your computer. You’re an architect, you know how to draw things up—”
“It’s not fake, Michael!” Mom cried out, grabbing one of the statements. She looked at the account numbers, then looked up at me with tears streaming down her face. “Lucas… you paid this? $6,000 every month?”
“Every single month for a year, Mom,” I said, looking directly into her eyes. “Seventy-two thousand dollars of my own money. Money I earned working extra hours, taking on night freelance jobs, and putting my own life on hold. I sent it to Khloe because Dad said he wouldn’t trust me handling his accounts, and Khloe claimed she would deliver the cash directly to the lender.”
Silence descended upon the living room like a heavy anvil.
Dad’s hands began to shake violently as he turned the pages. He saw the dates. He saw the exact dollar amounts. $6,000… $6,000… $6,000…
“Khloe!” Dad roared suddenly, his voice echoing off the high ceilings of the house. It wasn’t the voice of a proud father anymore; it was the desperate shout of a man who felt the ground crumbling beneath his feet. “KHLOE! GET DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW!”
Heavy footsteps shuffled overhead. The guest room door unlocked and clicked open. A few moments later, Khloe descended the stairs.
She had dropped her polished corporate appearance. She was wearing sweatpants, her hair was tied up in a messy bun, and her face was blotchy from crying. She didn’t look like a high-powered Chicago executive. She looked like a cornered animal.
She stopped at the bottom step, looking between Dad, Mom, and me. Her eyes immediately landed on the bank statements sitting open on the coffee table.
“Khloe,” Dad said, his voice trembling as he held up the paper showing the $72,000 total. “Tell me your brother is lying. Tell me he forged these documents.”
Khloe opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She looked at me, her eyes pleading for mercy, but I gave her a cold, unyielding stare.
“Khloe,” Mom whispered, her voice breaking completely. “Is this Lucas’s money?”
Khloe swallowed hard, stepping onto the living room carpet. “Dad… Mom… you don’t understand how hard things have been in Chicago—”
“IS THIS LUCAS’S MONEY?” Dad screamed, his voice cracking with rage.
“YES!” Khloe burst out, breaking down into hysterical sobs. “Yes! Okay? Yes! Lucas sent the money!”
Dad staggered backward as if he had been physically struck in the chest. He collapsed into the armchair behind him, his hands clutching his head. His face turned completely pale, the color draining from his lips as the crushing reality of his arrogance smashed into him.
“You…” Dad whispered, staring at his golden daughter in absolute horror. “You told me you were paying the mortgage with your executive salary. You let me brag about you to the entire family! You let me degrade your brother at my birthday dinner!”
“I was going to pay it back!” Khloe whimpered, wrapping her arms around herself. “My lifestyle in Chicago… my apartment, my clothes, the lease on my BMW… it costs way more than my actual salary! I was drowning in credit card debt! When Lucas started sending the $6,000 every month, I used the first few payments to catch up on the mortgage… but then my debt got worse! I thought I could just skip a few mortgage payments, invest the cash in a high-yield crypto trade, make a quick profit, and pay the bank back before anyone noticed!”
