PART 2 — THE SECRET BENEATH PUMP SIX

“EVERYBODY AWAY FROM THAT PUMP!” I shouted. General Thorne turned toward the sound. Officer Voss grabbed my shoulder, but I stepped forward despite the handcuffs. “There’s someone trapped underneath it!” I yelled. “And whoever’s controlling that fuel system doesn’t want us finding them.” Thorne pointed at Voss. “Remove those handcuffs.” “General, Captain Shaw ordered—” “I said remove them!” One of Thorne’s security officers stepped closer. Voss reluctantly unlocked my wrists. I rubbed my aching hands and immediately pointed toward the maintenance access. “General, I need that area secured.” Before he could answer, two patrol cars screeched into the station. Captain Everett Shaw climbed out, followed by three officers. His eyes went straight to Pump Six. Not to the general. Not to me. The pump. “Nobody touches that equipment!” he shouted. “This is an active local investigation.”

“Funny,” I said. “Your department never mentioned an investigation when I requested assistance.” Shaw approached until we stood inches apart. “You federal people think you can walk into my county and take over?” “I’m investigating stolen military property.” “Then get a warrant.” “We have authorization to examine the relevant delivery records, and the manager has agreed to provide them.” Shaw glanced toward Leah, who stood trembling beside the store. “She doesn’t own the underground equipment.” Thorne stepped between us. “Captain, explain why my investigator was handcuffed.” Shaw smiled tightly. “My officer believed she was impersonating a federal agent.” “And the broken badge?” Shaw glanced at Voss. “An unfortunate accident.” I laughed once. “He deliberately snapped it in front of witnesses.” Shaw’s smile vanished. “Watch your accusations.” Suddenly, a metallic crash sounded beneath the pump. I ran toward the access panel. Shaw lunged after me and seized my jacket. “I said stay back!” I twisted free. Thorne’s security officer intercepted Shaw before he could grab me again.

Leah rushed outside holding a ring of keys. “There’s a maintenance trench beneath the dispenser,” she said breathlessly. “The mechanic went down there this morning. He never came back.” “What mechanic?” I demanded. “Eli Turner. He found something in the underground transfer lines.” Voss abruptly reached for his radio. “Shut it down. Right now.” Shaw spun toward him. “Nolan! Shut your mouth!” I heard the panic in both voices. Leah unlocked the panel. Inside the narrow trench lay a man with a bleeding forehead, one ankle pinned beneath a steel bracket. I knelt beside him. “Eli? I’m Agent Cross. We’re getting you out.” His fingers closed around my sleeve. “The general’s convoy,” he whispered. “The fuel trucks… they’re using military escort records.” I froze. “What?” He pulled a tiny storage device from his pocket. “I copied the dispatch files. Shaw’s been registering private fuel movements under military authorization codes.” Then he grabbed my wrist harder. “The last shipment is coming here today.”

I looked up at Thorne. “General, someone has been using your command’s transportation credentials.” His face went rigid. “That’s impossible without internal access.” “Exactly.” Eli coughed. “They have someone inside the logistics office.” Before I could question him further, Leah screamed. Voss had seized her arm and was dragging her toward his patrol car. “She tampered with evidence!” he shouted. I charged toward them. Voss shoved Leah away and swung his elbow at my face. I ducked, caught his sleeve, and drove him backward against the vehicle. His radio fell onto the pavement. Shaw shouted for his officers to intervene, but Thorne’s security detail moved between us. I released Voss when another officer ordered him to keep his hands visible.

Then my SUV’s radio crackled through the open driver’s window. “Agent Cross, surveillance confirms an unauthorized tanker approaching the station.” I stared at the highway entrance. A massive white fuel truck had just turned onto the access road. Leah looked at its license plate and screamed, “That’s the truck! That’s the one they use!” The driver accelerated instead of stopping. People scattered. Thorne’s security officers shouted warnings. I saw the truck’s front wheels turn directly toward Pump Six, where Eli was still trapped underground. “GENERAL!” I screamed. “GET EVERYONE BACK!” The truck surged forward, its engine roaring, and I realized whoever was driving wasn’t coming to deliver fuel.

He was coming to destroy the evidence—with Eli still underneath it.

PART 3 — THE FOUR STARS THAT ENDED THE COVER-UP

“MOVE! MOVE!” I screamed as the tanker barreled toward Pump Six. General Thorne’s security team dragged two customers behind a concrete barrier. I sprinted toward the open maintenance trench while Eli struggled beneath the steel bracket. “Leave me!” he shouted. “Not happening!” I grabbed his vest and pulled as Leah rushed beside me. Together we shifted his shoulders clear of the machinery. A soldier from the security detail jumped down and lifted the bracket just enough to free Eli’s trapped ankle. The tanker blasted its horn. Tires shrieked. Then a deafening crash shook the forecourt. The truck struck a concrete protective bollard, swung sideways, and stopped with its front bumper inches from the dispenser. Its driver tried reversing. Two security officers reached the cab and ordered him to shut off the engine. Behind me, Leah collapsed against the store wall, shaking.
