Vance approached the center stage carrying a heavy, dark-cherrywood box lined with royal blue velvet. He took his place at the podium, adjusted the microphone, and looked out over the crowd.
“Thank you, Dean Bradley,” Dr. Vance said, his resonant baritone filling the hall. “When I founded the Vance Innovation Fellowship twenty years ago, I established a single rule: this grant is not given for potential. It is given for undeniable, world-altering achievement.”
He opened the velvet-lined box, revealing a massive medal crafted from solid platinum and a heavy parchment bearing the gold seal of the Vance Foundation.
“This year’s recipient has developed an enzymatic bypass that directly reverses chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity in pediatric brain cancer. Her research has already entered Phase II clinical trials, promising to save thousands of young lives every single year.”
Dr. Vance paused, his eyes traveling deliberately, mockingly up toward the Hensley family in Box Tier A.
“Accompanying this medal,” Vance announced, “is a direct, unrestricted research endowment of ten million dollars, along with the permanent Directorship of the Vance Pediatric Oncology Laboratory at Metropolitan General Hospital.”
Five thousand people held their breath.
