Special Agent Reynolds stepped in front of the terrace web camera, flashing her gold credential directly into the lens.

“Russell Carver, Diane Carver, and Elliot Carver,” Reynolds’ voice boomed through the speakers. “You are under arrest for attempted aggravated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, federal bank fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As the deputies hauled Elliot to his feet, twisting his arms behind him, his tear-streaked, terrified face was shoved directly in front of the iPad camera one last time.

His eyes locked onto mine.

“Maren!” he cried out, his voice cracking in absolute despair. “Maren, please! Don’t let them take me!”
