I smiled.

“I do.”

He handed me the flowers.

“I’m proud of you, Emily.”

For the first time, he said it without comparing me to anyone.

That evening, I placed the flowers beside my new desk and took a photograph.

I thought about Thanksgiving, the gravy boat, and fourteen people laughing while I stood holding something meant to serve them.

I’d spent years believing that if I gave enough, worked enough, and stayed quiet enough, my family would eventually see my worth.

But love shouldn’t require a monthly payment.

And the most important thing I brought to that Thanksgiving table wasn’t the bank statement.

It was the decision to stop paying for a place in my own family.
