*Emma. Priya reached out to my personal line. I’m currently in London, but my power of attorney is registered with First American Title in Cleveland. 1.3 million is fair. I’ll make it 1.35 million if you can guarantee Daniel and his harpy of a mother are off the premises by Saturday sundown. The wire is already pre-authorized through JP Morgan Private Bank. Send the purchase agreement.*
At eight o’clock on Thursday morning, Detective Raymond Miller of the Rocky River Police Department entered Conference Room C of Kaufman, Sterling & Shah.
He was fifty-five, had flat gray eyes, and carried the heavy, patient demeanor of a veteran municipal cop who had seen every conceivable permutation of suburban family dysfunction. He had a scarred leather notebook under his arm and a paper cup of black coffee from the lobby.
Emma sat at the end of the long glass table. She wore a tailored cashmere cardigan that concealed her nursing pads and a pair of dark slacks. Lily was asleep in the wheeled bassinet beside her, wrapped in a white waffle-knit blanket.
Priya Shah sat to Emma’s right, three separate manila folders stacked neatly before her.
“Mrs. Vance,” Detective Miller said, pulling out a chair. “Priya told me on the phone this wasn’t a standard domestic dispute.”
“It isn’t a domestic dispute, Detective,” Emma said calmly. “It is an aggravated grand theft in excess of one hundred thousand dollars, coupled with unlawful entry and controlled substance diversion.”
Miller paused, his pen hovering over his notepad. “Your husband’s family?”
“My estranged husband, Daniel Vance, his mother, Lorraine Vance, and his sister, Vanessa Vance.”
Emma turned her laptop so that the screen faced the detective.
She clicked *Play*.
The screen displayed the four-split high-definition camera view of the master bedroom at 240 Elmwood Terrace, timestamped yesterday at 11:14 AM.
On screen, Lorraine Vance was standing before Emma’s custom mahogany armoire. In her hands was an antique, velvet-lined rosewood box. Lorraine opened it, removed a three-strand matched South Sea pearl necklace—a gift to Emma from her maternal grandmother—and slipped it directly into her designer tote bag.
*”Daniel,”* Lorraine’s voice came through the high-grade directional microphone with crystal clarity. *”What about the platinum Cartier tank watch your father gave her for her graduation?”*
*”Take it,”* Daniel’s voice answered from the adjoining closet. *”Take the watch, take the sapphire earrings, take everything out of the safe. If she wants them back, she can trade them for the deed to the lake lot in Vermilion. She thinks she holds all the cards because of her trust fund. We’ll see how brave she is when she realizes her jewelry box is in my safety deposit box at KeyBank.”*
Detective Miller stopped writing. He stared at the screen, his jaw set in a hard, square line.
“Is that safe registered in both of your names, Mrs. Vance?” Miller asked.
“No,” Emma replied, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table. “The safe is a fireproof floor unit purchased by my father in 2012. It contains items specifically itemized in Thomas Holbrook’s testamentary trust: my mother’s engagement ring, certified appraisals totaling $118,000, two bearer bonds, and my personal passport.”
Emma clicked to another camera angle: the master bathroom.
Vanessa Vance was clearly visible, ransacking the medicine cabinet. She pulled down three amber bottles: fifty tablets of oxycodone prescribed to Emma following her C-section, eighty tablets of tramadol, and two bottles of liquid post-surgical antibiotics. Vanessa dumped them into a plastic Ziploc bag and laughed into the mirror.
*”Good luck with the recovery, sister-in-law,”* Vanessa murmured on camera before zipping the bag and shoving it into her purse.
“Controlled substance theft,” Priya stated crisply. “Schedule II narcotics. Ohio Revised Code § 2925.11. Vanessa Vance has two prior diversionary dispositions for prescription fraud in Cuyahoga County. That makes this a felony of the third degree.”
Detective Miller let out a slow whistle. He closed his notebook with a soft thud.
“Mrs. Vance, where are these three individuals right now?”
“They are currently at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya resort in Cancún, Mexico,” Emma said. “They are scheduled to return on Delta Flight 1842, arriving at Cleveland Hopkins International on Sunday evening at 6:45 PM.”
“Do you want me to send a unit to Elmwood Terrace right now?” Miller asked.
“No,” Emma said. “The house was sold this morning to Vance Logistics Real Estate Holdings LLC. The closing is finalized. The wire has cleared. Daniel Vance has no legal interest in that property, nor do his mother or sister. What I require from you, Detective, is an active felony warrant for Lorraine Vance, Vanessa Vance, and Daniel Vance for grand theft, burglary, and theft of dangerous drugs.”
