Miller rubbed his chin, looking at Emma with genuine professional admiration. “You want them picked up at the gate.”

“I want them arrested at the international terminal,” Emma said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute finality. “Before they reach baggage claim. While they are still wearing their resort shirts and their plastic wristbands.”

“And the property at Elmwood?” Miller asked.

“Arthur Vance takes physical possession tomorrow at noon,” Emma said. “He has contracted with a private asset recovery firm. By the time my husband lands in Ohio, there will not be a single stitch of his clothing left in that house.”

Detective Miller looked at Priya, then back at Emma.

“Mrs. Vance,” he said, rising from his chair and extending a broad, calloused hand. “I’ve seen a lot of spouses get burned in thirty years on the force. Most of them curl up into a ball and let their in-laws strip them to the bone. You’re a different breed altogether.”
